Laser Controlled Area (Safety) Signs

Laser Controlled Area (LCA) signs, often referred to as laser safety signs, must be placed at every entrance to any area that a Class 3 or Class 4 laser is being utilized. The LCA signs are specific to the specific laser device and region of the country where the laser is being utilized.

The LCA signs for the USA are different than the signs being used in Canada

and some regions may require that the LCA sign be bilingual.

The required design, color, and information contained in the signs are also specific to the country where the procedures are being performed and are determined by the laser safety standards for that country. (Examples: American National Standard ANSI Z136.1 for the Safe Use of Lasers in the USA and the Canadian National Standard CSA Z7001:24 Safe Use of Energy-Based Medical and Surgical Devices in Health Care

The AIM team has fabricated the different LCA signs for various models of lasers that can be downloaded in a PDF format to enable the LSO to have the appropriate sign printed with a color printer and then laminated for use when a laser procedure is being performed.  All the signs are available in English and some LCA signs are additionally available in English and French, as well as, in English and Spanish. To access the signs, click on the appropriate link enter the password provided in your training course.

It is the responsibility of the facility’s Laser Safety Officer to ensure that the appropriate Laser Controlled Area sign for the laser being used is downloaded and utilized when the laser is in operation.
